Transitioning Your Pet to a New Diet: A Step-by-Step Guide

Switching your pet's food doesn't have to be stressful, for you or for them. Whether you're moving to a new protein, trying a new brand, or switching formats entirely, say, from kibble to raw, a slow, steady transition is what makes the difference between a smooth switch and a rough week of upset stomachs.

If you're not sure where to start, here's a simple plan that works for most dogs and cats, along with real picks from our shelves, in stock and ready to go, if you're ready to make the change.

Why Go Slow?

Your pet's digestive system needs time to adjust to new ingredients, especially a new protein or fiber source. Switching too fast can lead to loose stool, gas, or a pet that just won't touch the new food. Going slowly over a week or two gives their gut bacteria time to catch up, so the switch actually sticks.

The 7 to 10 Day Plan

Start with about 75% of your pet's old food mixed with 25% of the new food for the first two to three days. Then move to a 50/50 mix for the next two to three days. By the final few days, feed mostly or all new food. If your pet has loose stool or seems uncomfortable at any point, slow down and hold at that ratio for a couple more days before moving on.

Signs It's Working

A smooth transition usually shows up as steady energy, a healthy coat, and stool that's holding firm within a few days of the full switch. If problems stick around past a week, it's worth checking in with your vet just to rule out anything else going on.
